Phase 10 card games were invented by Kenneth Johnson in 1982. The game was purchased by Mattel in 2010 from the company fundex games. Ever since Mattel is responsible in the endorsement of this game. The game can be easily familiarised by those who have played rummy. The game derives its nomenclature from the rule of the game, and that is that a player shall go through ten phases or melds in order to win the game. Despite its sale fundex still, markets for this game of Mattel.
Phase 10 Rules :
The game like every other card game is high on probability. Phase 10 seeks a couple of deck of cards. The game may appear similar to uno because the players yearn to get rid of their cards. But here another requirement is that the player ensures to finish all his/her 10 phases along with getting away with all the cards he/she has in hands.
About the cards
The total aggregate of cards used in phase 10 is 110. Out of these, there are 96 numbered cards which are divided into groups of 4 colours,e yellow, blue, red and green. Each colour group has a similar set of cards. So each colour group has 24 cards which have a duet of numbered cards from ace to 12. Then there are eight wild cards and four skip cards.
There are two duplicate reference cards that delineate the phases that the players must match as the game progresses.

One may conjecture that this game is easier in comparison to uno due to the less number of cards but in reality, phase 10 phases the various rules and restrictions make it a much challenging game in comparison to uno.
WILD CARDS :
Pretty similar to their usage in uno, wild cards are used in phase 10 by the player in order to decide the colour or number of his/ her requirement to replace with a card in their phase. This card comes with lots of benefactions and can be used multiples of times by a player but only if the player shows up a minimum of 1 card to complete the phase. The player shall be cautious that the card cannot be re-used or pulled back once it is drawn.
Again, the card has a similar rule to uno. Here the card is drawn by the player to skip the turn of any other player of hi/her choice. This card can not be picked up from the discard pile but only from the draw pile by the player. The card can be wonderful if a player manages to skip the turn of someone who is about to complete a phase in the game. If the card is drawn at first, then the first person loses the turn.
The game can be played among 2 to 6 players. It initiates when one of the players shuffles the deck of cards and dissipates ten cards to each player. There is one pile of draw cards and another pile of discarded cards. The pile of discarded cards grows from the cards drawn by the players.
It is imperative that the players do not show their cards to each other otherwise the base of chance and uncertainty gets distorted and the players will construct strategy by the awareness of the cards of their opponents.

A phase refers to a particular combination or set of combinations of cards that a player must match accordingly to the set criteria given on the reference cards.

Phase 5 – one run of 8

Phase 10 – one set of 5+ one set of 3
A set is any combination of cards with the same number irrespective of the color. For instance – a set 3 will mean any number of cards with the same number ‘3’ irrespective of their color.
A run is a combination of cards in a series of appropriate numerical order. For example – a run of 7 would mean a combination of cards in the order ( there can be any acceptable order) 3,4,5,6,7,8,9.
Phase 8 is the single phase of the game in which the color of the cards is of some significance. Here any group of 7 cards can be used irrespective of their number. The only necessity is that the color of the cards should be same.

The players must remember at all times that a phase can only be laid if the player has all the combinations that are demanded in that phase. For example– if a player in phase 2 only shows up a set of 3 and not a run of 4 then the phase would be incomplete. This will be a foul play.
Each player can make only one phase in a given a hand.
While the game goes on if a particular player manages to complete a phase first in the first hand, then the deck is reshuffled, and the cards have the upper hand amongst all the players. The player who finished the phase has an upper hand now because he/she can advance to making the next phase while his opponents still attempt to finish their first phase.
No matter how close someone was to completing a phase the player has to start from scratch again after a new hand has begun.
The attempt is to hold as minimum as a possible number of cards at the end of each hand. The winner of Phase 10 is that individual who finishes his phases and also is left with no card.
Getting rid of the cards can be mundane and tedious. Thus there lies a strategy that helps to get rid of more than one card along with finishing the phase.
This strategy is called hitting.
In hitting, a player can dispose of off more than one of his/ her card by adding them to their own completed phase or to that of their opponent’s. For instance – suppose your opponent finished phase 4 ( one run of 7) with cards 3,4,5,6,7,8,9,10 then you could contribute to their phase by giving away your card 11 ( suppose you had that). Likewise, you could give away wild cards to a suitable finished phase since wild cards are so flexible in their usage.
There is a fixed scoring system, but the alteration in phase 10 from other games is that a high score is not a favourable score for any player. The attempt here is to have as a minimum a score as possible.
- Any numbered card from 1-9 scores 5 points each
- Any numbered card from 10-12 is of 10 points each
- Every skip card comes with 15 points
- Every wild card adds 25 points to your score
The interesting aspect of the game is that despite their powers and benefits the skip card and wild card invites more points to the scoreboard which suggests they won’t always be a desirable card. These cards are best employed in an emergent situation.

Tie or draw
